Peruvian Chief looks a really solid bet, and with Trace Clip likely to dog it, the only conceivable danger looks to be Olivia Grace.

From the point of view of "placed to win", Budelli is a very interesting horse in this race.
Looking through the form, he has always raced prominently until the Gt. St. Wilfrid, and the form indicates that he may not have quite lasted home.
Since then he has been ridden from off the pace, possibly to give him chance to last home over 6f.
Since being ridden this way, he has gradually improved, and, in my opinion, ran by far his best race lto. If the above assumptions are correct then he is a loaded gun for today.

I am responding to your post on another thread here, for two reasons. The first will be clear if you read the last section of my final reply to Quinelle on that thread. The second is that, for discussion of your entirely reasonable post, this is perhaps the more appropriate thread.

I have three comments on the matter you raise:

(1) my current view is that the various letters, articles etc by VDW were probably written by one individual - and I reach this conclusion by noting the consistency of style and content;

(2) on whether that individual's name was C Van der Wheil, and that he (or she) had the personal history briefly touched upon by VDW in some posts, and by Tony Peach in the introductory material included in several of the booklets, I currently have no view;

(3) while I very much suspect that some of the selections were identified after the relevant races (a view I hold having analysed them and, to the best of my ability, identified both the factors suggesting specific horses might win and contra-indications), I nevertheless see the author of the letters, articles etc as someone with a unique understanding of how, successfully, to analyse racing form, and a genuine benefactor for being prepared to share much of the approach.

Finally, I try to keep up to date with new material relating to VDW, but one can never be sure that one is, indeed, up to date. It is my impression that little new material about the author or his approach has become available for some years. (The large majority of more recent publications on VDW being older material re-cycled or, frankly, "takes" on VDW by people with palpably less real understanding of his approach than Guest and others demonstrate on this thread.) But that does not mean that the possibly of genuinely new material coming to light does not exist, and I stand ready to re-appraise my current views on (1) to (3) above, and personal understanding of the VDW approach, in the light of it.

Thanks for the reply. I have guests (I wrote that with a capital 'G'!) arriving shortly so have to run out and score some octopus and this and that, so I'll reply later, including the reply I have yet to pen from a few days before.

A different story but...
I have no time to check out the races today, the promising bets looked to be:
B 2:15 Dream With Me
B 4:20 Celtic Vision
S 4:35 Lost The plot
If someone else checks out these races from a VDW viewpoint can I trust their conclusions sufficiently to justify a bet?

It all depends on who checks it out. Among those who, from time to time comment pre "the off", there are three who can be relied upon to get it right from a VDW perspective (invidious to name them, but you are sure to get at least one right). But beware: as we all know, even those commanding betting attention from a VDW perspective don't ALWAYS win!.

Its also worth noting that, after some weeks of essentially dry weather in most of England, there is general and (hopefully) substantial rain. Come racing time, goings may not be as firm as indicated in the Post.

Max,

LOL

johnd,

ascot race;- the two you put up are good uns but there is one for me which prevents me going overboard, in the shape of online investor. On two yr old ratings he was on a list to keep an eye on, the step up could really be the making of him especially if the rain slows the others down a bit.

I know that you didnt ask for views and anyway its probably a donkey, but i just thought i would mention it, but dont let me put you off.

Your views are always welcome, solicited or otherwise. I have had another look at O.I., and I can see some promise about 4 ago, but it's had a lot of chances, and shown nothing like it's 2yo form in any of them. Thanks anyway.
I looked at Desert Alchemy earlier, and I rate its form 2 ago as at least the equal of the fav's, and her lightly raced ones are invariably her better ones, but you would have expected it to finish a bit closer lto. Whatever happens, good luck today.

From the many races being run today there are 8 horses that I consider should win their races and they are as follows -

Ascot 2.20 Big Bad Bob 2.50 Revenue 3.25 Love Everlasting
Gowran Park 4.00 Ballyconnell 4.30 Anvil Lord
Southwell 4.35 Lost The Plot
Hexham 2.10 Glinger
York 2.35 Cumbrian Venture

However in my view the only ones to actually back are Big Bad Bob, Ballyconnell , Anvil Lord and Lost The Plot. The reasons are all tied up with the odds.
