    Maj Jasper Maskelyne was a master of deception and held to have been the greatest magician of all time.
    His talents were put to extensive use during WWII in preparing evidence to fool the enemy.
    At the time of D Day (60 years ago today) he built divisions of armoured vehicles from wood and canvas which even when photographed from only a few hundred feet were indistinguishable from the real thing. This helped to convince the German high command that D Day was in fact only a diversion and led to the fatal (for them) decision not to commit all their armour to the landings when they were still vulnerable.
