As I'm sure you will realise this thread to those who are genuinely interested in understanding VDW is rich with information, advice, etc and I for one would be at a major loss without it.

I'm with you mate.
I've been trying to get to grips with VDW since 1997 with little success.
I retired 2 months ago and have spent a lot of time reading old postings. (I have even made the odd posting myself although generally getting blanked. You really are a tight little clique on here.) I have to say I have learned more from Lee and Investor than any of the others, so keep going lads.

Also, the banter is very entertaining and banter and winding up is what I think is really going on.

To those who are still willing to persevere, remember the old saying; 'With persistence and perseverance you can fk flies'.

If you don't mind I would rather wait for Lee's thoughts on the subject. Nothing against you, but we do seem to be just going round and round and getting nowhere. I want to know if Lee makes P out of form, or is the deciding factor B has the best form, and would win even if P was in form?

As I have said I have looked at Pegwell Bay, the main reason VDW seems to prefer PG to ST is the going. As far as I can see I would have taken that line of thinking as well. Of course I maybe wrong, but I think the real reason VDW used this example was to show the 2nd numerical picture in action. Using this method PK would have been one of the first horses eliminated from the Erin.

Let's take this one step at a time,Firstly you said i had a problem with "ability".I understand that It isn't wise to stray from the top few.Are you implying that i have misunderstood this quote.I would just like to say that i believe there were double meanings in a lot of what vdw said or it was a bit cryptic would you agree with that.

You asked me where it was that I thought you were going wrong and I passed comment, I will not get into an argument over it. Neither will I go through a question and answer session point by point over it. It's up to you to investigate the point or not, as you see fit.

I,like you have been at VDW for sometime now and dare I say it, I feel that I am just starting to make in roads.

The 2 words that one needs to understand ( in my opinion )are relativity and context.

Its been a very bad year for all my family but time they say is a great healer.

Racing wise, primarily due to one or two very nice touches, I've had a cracking year. That said, my betting boots are presently off which is the norm for me at this time of year.

With the ability rating remaining a hot topic of conversation I'd be interested in your thoughts on Castle Warden's run before he won at Huntingdon. He was beaten by a horse in County Member with a lower ability rating than CW yet I understand County Member was considered the better horse.

The ability rating, I suspect can therefore only be a guide ?

I'm in no way trying to dodge the question but I don't have the form books to assess this race. I do remember at one time queering the fact that Castle Warden was a form horse (based on how others were explaining their definition of a form horse) After reading the Old Fellow example again I think it is well possible he is in fact a form horse.

The interesting thing is you say C Member is the better horse even though he has a LOWER a/rating. While I except the a/rating is just a guide, why do you think CM is the better horse? If everything conditions, etc. are in the horses favour shouldn't the best horse win? If not I can't see the point of having the a/rating.

When I do get this form book I have to say these examples will be the last I look at. I don't think they are actual c/form horses, didn't VDW say other points/factor had to looked at? These are just horses that where in form and had the highest a/rating, used as an example to show the a/rating worked.

I agree the (any) a/rating is a guide, I have never said otherwise. However the guide has to be accurate and VDW said it is better to stick to the top few. Does that really include horses that are well down the list on ability?

I did think of you when I was assessing the Cambridgeshire, I had a look and said why? Couldn't see it, but well done.

I know what you mean. These message boards can appear to be a bit of a 'clique'. I think all that is going on is that people need to see you are going to be around for more than just the odd post here and there and then gone.

I noticed on another board the other night that someone wanted help. Ectoo answered him with the information. That person has never returned to the board, to which I noted Ectoo's later comment "You're Welcome" (funny by the way).

So stick at it... you'll break 'em down eventually... and who knows, you could be the next centre of attention!
