I understand what your'e saying about the better horses coming out later usually over 7f but i don't understand your'e comment regarding 6f Nasij won lto over a mile,Therefore proving that it was a or is a possible middle distance horse,I agree neither should have been supported today but your'e other comments have confused me somewhat. Interesting to note that when the style of appraisal sits comfortably with your sense of VDW's approach you happily embrace it, despite it being posted after the event. But when an explanation is given of a winner found by the class/form approach in similar post-race circumstances, you raise all sorts of objections. Ah me.

Needless to say, nothing in this post should be taken as in any way expressing doubt about the genuineness of Mike's selection. A good call on the day and duly rewarded.

Fulham.
thanks for your thoughts. I have looked at the weight issue a great deal & can't come to any conclusions apart from VDW saying that each horse has its own limit. An area I need to look at a lot more methinks.

Nearly all VDW's selections in handicaps had won, or gone very close, with the weight they were scheduled to carry in the races for which VDW was considering them. There were exceptions, Roushayd most notably, but arguably these have their own logic.

The above observation (which anyone with the Form Books can check) may be coincidental and of no significance whatsoever. Alternatively ...

There s clear lesson in Mickeddy's post. That it has gone over the head of supposedly racing-minded people is not my problem

You and me both.

Johnd

I was not commenting on Mike's admirably clear post - rather, on your hypocrisy.

It's alright being wise after the event,The horse hadn't won over this trip since aug 2001 class /form horse no doubts whatsoever, but temperement plays a major part in these methods,It's like water off a ducks back,There have been some good examples of when and when not to bet today,And iv'e thouraghally enjoyed it and it's not finished yet. It's about being constructive,You said that you weren't backing Compton Bolter And then you pass comments that feed those that don't understand the methods,Please explain from a vdw point of view WHY you didn't put money on C.B i for one would love to know,And then maybe you could explain your'e comments that you put post race. Smile

An interesting day's racing, with six horses discussed in some detail.

2.20 Newbury - Sun on the Sea, W13/2.
2.55 Newbury - Arzoo, 3rd 4/1.
7.20 Hamilton - Compton Bolter, W4/1.
7.35 Stratford - Tom's Prize, unpl. ?2/1.
8.20 Aintree - Aegean, 3rd 9/2.
8.20 Aintree - Ballybrophy, W100/30.

How many would VDW have backed, I wonder, given his comment that "No element of a gamble should be allowed to creep in"?

Our hunches must depend, of course, on what we infer from his writings and examples about what, precisely, he meant by "gamble". My hunch is that he would have had just the one bet: on Compton Bolter.

I can see why you are so popular with certain others on this thread

No I didnt back
And Neither would I have done
The ground was all that bothered me
As I stated it didnt matter did it in the end up
if you have other reasons for not backing
thats your fault not mine
As for hasnt won over this trip since when ever
could it have been too high in the ratings that caused that

I can understand your'e comments on Compton Bolter,And it's 2nd Lto btn one and a quarter lgs at 20/1 was a very good run,There was no doubt that the horse was c/f and i know from your'e comments early on today that you were keen on his chances.Nevertheless you have to go back quite a long way infact to goodwood 2001 before we reach any decent form over this trip,I fully understand why youv'e made the comment that you have,I just feel that the recent form wasn't good enough.
